NiT’s recent visit to the NAU Salgados Palace revealed a surprising reality. This hotel not only offers excellent conditions and infrastructures for the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) segment, including the ability to host large-scale business events, such as the 1st Michelin Guide Portuguese Gala. It will all take place on February 27 next year in Albufeira, Algarve, at the NAU Salgados Palace & Congress Center in Guia.
Located in the heart of the Algarve, the NAU Salgados Palace is a place that manages to harmonize the business world with the pleasure of vacations in a remarkable way, and offers a unique experience to all visitors.
“Receiving the first Michelin Guide entirely dedicated to Portugal will be a great honor for the entire team at the NAU Salgados Palace hotel, for the Algarve and for Highgate Portugal. The Michelin Guide is considered one of the most prestigious references in world gastronomy and its presence in Portugal, with a unique event taking place in our hotel, is recognition of the quality of our service and infrastructures” – says the group’s spokesperson.
Until now, Portugal was part of the Iberian gala, where, for obvious reasons of the size of the countries, the main protagonist was Spain. 2024 will be the year when this changes, marking a new era for Portuguese gastronomy. Michelin highlighted the Algarve as “one of the country’s iconic regions,” and emphasized that it is “one of Europe’s leading gastronomic destinations, with a vast culinary wealth that attracts countless food lovers from all over the world.” This gala will be a unique opportunity to promote the Algarve internationally as a gastronomic destination of excellence.
Portugal currently has 31 restaurants with one Michelin star (representing “cuisine of the highest standard, worth a stop”) and seven with two Michelin stars (indicating “excellent cuisine, worth the detour”). However, the country still doesn’t have any restaurants with the maximum distinction of three Michelin stars (“a unique cuisine that justifies the trip”).
The Algarve is proud to be home to two of the seven Portuguese restaurants with two Michelin stars: Vila Joya, headed by chef Koschina, and Ocean, headed by Hans Neuner. In addition, the region boasts a number of restaurants with one Michelin star, such as Vistas by Rui Silvestre, A Ver Tavira by Luis Brito, Al Sud by Louis Anjos, Bon Bon by José Lopes, Gusto by Heinz Beck and Vista by João Oliveira.
The restaurants at the Nau Salgados Palace, the building next to the Congress Center on Salgados Beach, don’t have any of these stars – but they’re close. The NAU Salgados Palace is a modern venue with spacious and comfortable rooms, where guests can enjoy a range of activities, including four swimming pools and a variety of dining options, from lavish buffets to à la carte dinners.
The Michelin Gala in the Algarve promises to be a prestigious event that will celebrate Portugal’s rich culinary heritage and elevate the region as an internationally renowned gastronomic destination. This event is a unique opportunity for Portugal and the Algarve to shine on the global gastronomic scene.
